Chapter 6
THE TRUTH COMES OUT
The Cowboys beat the Eagles in a great second half. Sarit had watched from the stands as the team celebrated. In the car on the way home, Allie chattered happily about the game. Mom seemed happy too.
âMy daughter had the winning basket!â Mom exclaimed, smiling at Allie. âIâm so proud of you! The whole team played so well tonight. I canât believe Naomi scored on that three-point shot.â
âI know!â Allie exclaimed. âAnd Annaâs free throw in the fourth quarter was incredible. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.â
âBut then you stole it from the other center and came back up the court and scored with three seconds left on the buzzer!â Mom said. â32-29. Amazing.â
Sarit sat silently in the backseat as her mom and sister recapped the game. Even though she was with her family, sheâd never felt so lonely.
Itâs like they donât even know Iâm here, she thought.
When they got home, Sarit went straight up to her room. She heard Mom and Allie talking downstairs, but she didnât want to hear what they were saying.
She took off her shoes and climbed into bed. She wanted to forget the whole day had happened.
Actually, Iâd like to forget this whole year, Sarit thought. She wanted to wake up and have everything back the way it was before the divorce.
But when Sarit opened her eyes a few minutes later, she knew immediately that wasnât going to happen. Her mom was standing over her, holding the phone and looking furious.
Uh-oh, Sarit thought. She could tell she was in big trouble.
âSarit, I called your father,â Mom said. âThis has gone on long enough. He didnât even know that youâd quit playing basketball.â
Sarit felt sick to her stomach. She knew her dad was not going to be happy, especially about her lying to him. She reached out and took the phone. âHi, Dad,â she whispered.
